Some random photos from OSDay 2025. I gave a talk about the BSD family and why to use them in 2025.

I wanted a #Wireguard GUI client for #FreeBSD and there wasn't none so I put this QT6 thing together last night.
@madamada Isn't this more of a Linux issue? I' haven't seen /bin/bash /usr/bin/wg-quick up wg0 lingering after destroying the connection, but I haven't been looking. I'm using 14.3-BETA4 and my stability issues with WiFi are more prescient in my mind ;0
Okay, so I have a little gripe with Contabo, I have a VPS with their EU HUB and for some reason, IPv6 there seems flawed.
I added prefix::1/64 to vtnet0 and this address is pingable. However when I add an IP alias prefix::2/128 and use this source address in ping, I get no replies.
Contabo says they assign a /64 per-VPS..
PF is disabled during the test. ndp -na shows their gateway address in the table with an Expire of a few seconds..
netstat -rn6 | grep default shows the default gateway pointing to them, all seems good yet somehow a mystery..
Anyone face similar issues like this with them ?
@madamada maybe @namedbird can contribute?
@madamada I have toyed around with multiple IPv6 addresses in the past and am pretty sure it worked that time. 😅 (but i ain't exactly an expert)
Try checking your firewall and routing config one last time and if you don't spot anything amiss there, then you could try asking their support.
I'll be escalating this to their support for sure..

I just tested this on FreeBSD 14.2 and it works on the main Host and usable in a vnet jail.
@stefano Why do you think it could be a better option than FreeBSD?
@NebulaTide it doesn't run with 14.2 (but does better with 14.3). Mainly, suspension isn't supported - I know OpenBSD should be more mature with the new suspension modes
@stefano Maybe it runs better with 15? I know, it’s not released yet, but it seems promising. I have the same issue with my mini workstation but I hope it will become better with 15. Xorg is also not a real option for my 4K display.
@NebulaTide it probably would, but I don't want to run an unreleased version as primary workstation. So I'll patiently wait 😉
@stefano Me too, that's why I'm still using 14.3 But I also don't want to remove my existing system and install OpenBSD on it. Creating my current setup was a lot of work and I'm still not finished. And there are some things that simply don't seem to work on any of the BSD...
@NebulaTide True. I have my good setup on my "traditional" Desktop, and it's reliable. I love it.
@stefano What's your "good setup"? FreeBSD, OpenBSD, something else... My good setup was MacOS for a long time, but times are changing...
@NebulaTide On Desktop, if supported, it would be FreeBSD as I largely use jails and VMs (I prepare env for clients on my PC and move them later). OpenBSD is ok, but I miss some features like jails. If impossible, Linux is ok, too.
On laptop, often MacOS or Linux, but I'd prefer one of the BSDs.
@stefano Power Management is still an issue with all BSD. Not as perfect as on Linux and far beyond MacOS's power management. Unfortnuately.
@stefano I run OpenBSD on all of my thinkpad laptops 🙂 With the right hardware it is a great desktop operating system that "just works".
@stefano filesystems are not the same you can do dual boot.
On my T14s, I've reserved 50gb for OpenBSD, but since FreeBSD (ghostBSD to be precise), I'm no more going back to it ☹️.
Lack of suspend is not that annoying for me because boot is quite quick, and batteries can run about 6 hours 👍. So I boot once in the morning and shutdown on the evening.
With Mate, I retrieve my apps where they were.
@stefano oups. OpenBSD 7.7 is perfectly managing suspend ant WiFi card of my lenevo T14s amd ryzen pro 7
(It was not the case with OpenBSD 7.6)
Sad that FreeBSD cannot do it ☹️
@stefano surprisingly. The person developping s0ix on freebsd is Obiwac living 30 minutes from me 😉.
But it's not clear what is the exact status. He is working on it, but I'm not able to estimate where he is and when this will come is the main source tree.
@videlft They're going to give a really interesting talk at BSDCan. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend their presentation live because it’s scheduled at the same time as mine 😉
@madamada Yes, it will be live streamed. This is my intervention and its schedule: https://indico.bsdcan.org/event/5/contributions/123/
But for the rest who are looking to switch over, most of them end up going back to what they were using before..not because of the know-how, but because they would have to 'tinker' with it, and this leaves a bad taste for them..
It has to be something that 'just works' and easy to use, if they are gonna spend half a day tinkering with the OS, they will soon realize it's better to look elsewhere or go back to what use to just work for them..
So to recommend someone to switch over, the OS has to:
1. Just works
2. Easy to use
3. Extendable
If you have 1 and 2, you have a loyal customer :>
For 3, this they can opt in later when they have built the confidence to do so..
So it is not trivial to recommend someone to switch over.
Happy monitoring :>
So I guess that answers it :
People working on Linux or the BSDs (or illumos based OSes, etc), are you using two monitors? And, if so, what do you use them for?
I'm trying to understand if it makes sense to keep two monitors on my desk
Please boost
#Linux #FreeBSD #OpenBSD #NetBSD #illumos #SmartOS #OmniOS #IT #SysAdmin
| One Monitor: | 209 |
| Two Monitors: | 228 |
Closed
Thinkpad laptop docked to the left and sits there quietly :>
@stefano @claudiom #OpenBSD user here.
I use two monitors because I work remotely, do a fair amount of web development in addition to IT work, plus video meetings & podcasting. Most days I need have a large terminal (tmux/vim w/a couple windows), a web browser, plus the browser's debugger, and maybe an email client or video conference window if I'm in a meeting/review.
All that said, the two displays are 1080p because I generally use older hardware that may not support 4K.
@stefano One monitor, but 10 workspaces on i3wm, 16:9. Caught myself starring at the wrong monitor too often. Neck was not amused :)
@stefano I mostly sit in my Aeron office chair and use my 50" TV as a monitor.
Sometimes, I use the Vision Pro as a computer screen. In wide or very wide mode. Very wide is basically two 4K monitors side-by-side.
